Sanitizer of choice?

:happybeer: Greets all! I was curious as to which sanitizer you prefer or recommend? For many years, I used 1/2 tsp of chlorine bleach per gallon without any troubles. However, I had a batch taste like band-aids about 2 years ago, and read that it could have been too much bleach residue in the bottl...

Re: Does the type of DME matter when making a starter?

Wow, great thread! I'm learning a lot. For years, I used the dry yeast packs that came with my extract kits, and just mixed them in a tall glass of warm water (after boiling to sterilize) with a tablespoon of priming sugar. By the time my boil was done, and cooled, there was a nice foam at the top o...

Re: Disposing of spent grains after the mash...

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Without any composting needs, I think I'll just bag it and put it in the outside trashcan. Good thing trash collection is Monday morning... :)

Re: Just joined!

Most of the guys here are all-grain. You might want to observe one of their brew-days just to see the process, but that's not really necessary (I did my first AG day "by the seat of my pants")... Are you doing a simple gravity-fed system? That's by far the simplest way to go... After read...

Disposing of spent grains after the mash...

Hi all, Just about to try my 1st all-grain batch, and was wondering what everyone does with the spent grain after the mash? Having been extract brewer only, I would just toss any specialty grains into the trash still in their cheesecloth sack. Now, I imagine that 10-14 lbs of ground wet grain doesn'...

Adding a thermometer to a cooler conv. mash tun..

Hey all, New to the boards, and finally decided to setup for my 1st attempt at all-grain brewing! Yeah! I bought a rubbermaid 10-gal water cooler to convert into my mash tun. I replaced the factory valve with a weldless ball-valve conv. kit, and attached the inner FPT to a false bottom via some HT t...

Just joined!

Hey all, Just wanted to say 'hi' to everyone! I started extract brewing back in 1993 and have been meaning to go all-brain since the late 90's.. :D I got a little side-tracked with 2 different careers, a wife, 3 kids, etc. etc. (you know how that goes!) But, I am actually going to do it now! I've be...
