Weekend Brewing Fun

The other day I had the pleasure of being mash-bitch at a local brewpub. One of the principals had just had knee surgery and I volunteered to help out ... I had been hanging out there during their re-model as he'd asked me to reconfigure and weld up the railings that surround his bright tanks. So wh...

Re: Keg O-Rings

I took a caliper and measured a couple of lid o-rings last night. The majority were 0.270 ... I suspect these are the equivalent to the 1/4" rings on McMaster. I did find one ring that measured .305 a shade under 5/16" which I cannot find on Mcmaster) and I believe that this one is the thi...

Keg O-Rings

Does anyone happen to know of our Keg Lid O-Rings as listed in Tips and Tricks are the "thicker" ones? I was trying to solve a leak issue with one of my kegs .. when I went to the LHBS the proprietor sold me a new thicker O-Ring and it solved my issue. He told me that he only installs the ...

Congrats to Dustin! I'd love to help but I'm a bit G.U. Seems to me that maybe a club meeting may be in order!

Re: bottle sterilization

+1 to everything said above ... I pretty much follow Chris's sterilizing routine with that same spray pump on my bottle rack but I use the non-foaming Star-san. And likewise for Brad's label washing ... hot oxi-clean in the sink and a scrubber.

Mill Upgrade

So way back when I built my motorized mill I used an 8" sheave ... it ran a little fast but did the job. Recently I found a 12" sheave and upgraded. The mill was slower, didn't get "stuck" as it had sometimes in the past and seemed to be doing a better job. All was well until mas...

Re: Honey wheat

If you're in a properly sealed system, bubbles are a good indicator. In the past I've relied on seeing krausen as well. Seems to me that in a closed system (e.g. a conical) bubbles may well be your only indicator. I only get to see evidence of Krausen once we get to cleanup ... I certainly agree wi...

Re: Honey wheat

I'm more concerned if there is significant activity in the first 12 hours. :) That's an interesting viewpoint... with starters and repitching, I as often as not have "significant" activity in the first 12 hours. I'm presuming that you mean regular bubbles in the airlock when you say signi...
