Reading Material
Did a little book shopping on Amazon over the weekend and just got the notice it has shipped.
Extreme Brewing: An Enthusiast's Guide to Brewing Craft Beer at Home by Sam Calagione
Brewing Up a Business: Adventures in Entrepreneurship from the Founder of Dogfish Head Craft by Sam Calagione
Tasting Beer: An Insider's Guide to the World's Greatest Drink by Randy Mosher
Until Beer Wars I had never heard that much about what Dogfish and Sam Calagione were trying to do. Since watching it I've been more on a look out and both look right up my ally.
I've also been working toward learning more on how to really taste beer and this book was recommended by both the BJCP and Cicerone programs.

Re: Reading Material
Tasting Beer is a good read and Extreme Brewing has some interesting ideas in there that can give you ideas for working with different types of ingredients.
I've never read Brewing Up a Business.
I think there have been some posts on the forums before about book recommendations, you might want to search for them. Invariably How To Brew by John Palmer and Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels come up along with several others.
Oh, and welcome to the club!

Re: Reading Material
Already had How to Brew (even got it signed when John came to Eric's shop)
Really with both of Sam's books it came down to wanting to know more after Beer Wars!

Re: Reading Material
I thought "Brewing up a business" had useful info, but the presentation was a bit narrow. Basically the book largely talked about what Dogfish Head did and why it worked. But Dogfish is a very unique brewery and not all of those lessons will necessarily transfer.
I found it was best to read it as one man's story of how he started a brewery, rather than a manual on starting one yourself. Definitely some good anecdotal records of what Calagione was trying to do, but you have to pick and choose whether you'd try to follow a similar route.

Re: Reading Material
Brewing up a Business is a good read, but it really is just Sam talking about how great he is, which is fine. If you want to read more books about the trials and tribulations of starting a brewery, Beer School by Steve Hindy & Tom Potter, and Beer for Pete's Sake by Pete Slosberg are both entertaining.
I'm waiting for Patrick Rue's autobiography to be published.

Re: Reading Material
I agree with Brad*2 on the Brewing up a Business read. But the amount of effort required was confirmed when I had a chat with Patrick.
If you like Belgian beers, Brewing Like a Monk is worthwhile. Brent´s recommendations are good reads too.
I think I´d like to read the tasting book.

If you are interested in learning more about tasting beer and the flavors in beer, Evaluating Beer is a great book. It's a collection of different articles published by Brewers Publications.
