March 2021 Club Meeting March 16th, 7 PM via Zoom

Post by indianajns »

The March 2021 meeting will be Tuesday, March 16th at 7:00 PM PST via zoom.
The California Department of Public health has not modified its guidance on gatherings since November of 2020. Therefore, we will continue to meet via zoom this month. Hopefully we will have guidance prior to the April meeting allowing us to meet again in person. I will keep the club updated via the forum and Facebook once we have revised guidance on gatherings.

Calvin's Style Presentation will be Red Ale.

Club Brew Buy is back this month with the Brewing Reserve in Costa Mesa. Brewing Reserve has a Red Ale that will be included with the club buy so you can follow along with Calvin during the presentation. Club Member Michael will also be on hand to discuss BR's beers.

Club Brew Buys function by purchasing beer through a breweries website. At the end of the club brew buy window, all of the club beers will be picked up from the brewery and distributed to two central locations. Yorba Linda, and Brewers Hardware in Huntington Beach to be picked up. (Delivery is possible dependent on your location. Kick me a message if you would like your beer to be delivered and we will see if we can work it out.)

The Details:

1. Before 3 PM on March 12th log on to Brewing Reserve's retail website here:
https://www.brcbeer.store/

2. Select 'Mix 6-Pack'. Club member Mike, who is a brewer at BR, will be including the following beers in the mix 6: tropical blonde, a hazy, a west coast double, a red, a pale ale, and a milk stout. Feel free to order any other beers from the menu and we will make sure they are included with your Mix-6.

3. Next, you will need to pick a date and a time. You can choose Friday, March 12th. Please respond to this post once you order to assist in ensuring your beers are included with all other BrewCommune orders.

Thanks and feel free to DM me with any questions or respond to this post. Please also encourage friends, neighbors and family to participate as well. This club buy is not limited to club membership.

Cheers and see you at the meeting on March 16th @ 7 PM
Greg

For the red ale talk: (1) keep in memory, (2) have a beer that is American blonde, red, amber, brown, pale ale. I will talk about comparisons between them. There are some styles in the 6 pack. Those are BIG cans, so plan accordingly if you want to drink the red + other that meeting.

Topic will be yeast harvesting and repitching. Bring any stories/questions on the subject. I will try to make this more open discussion. I plan not to touch on pitch rate, propagation, and other subject. They can be brought in if wanted.

From,
Calvin

March Notes
Next In Person Meeting:
No update form California Dept of Heath on club gatherings.
Hope is for April. Greg will inform club. Windsor Brew has offered up his Anaheim Hills location.
Club Homebrew Competition with Melvin Brewing in July. If you have beers you want considered for club beer, let Greg know.
National Homebrewing Competition: Last day for refund tomorrow. Beer entry info change until March 28. Ship dates are on March 29 to April 9th. 6 12 oz beers needed.
Homebrew Con: June 17, 18 and 19. San Diego. June 19 award competition. Town and Country Convention Hotel. – Update: Now to be held online.

Southern California Homebrewing Camping Weekend: officially cancelled. April 30 – May 2nd.

Style Presentation: Red Ale see Calvin’s presentation.
Example: Brewer’s Reserve Falcon 9 Red Ale presented by Brew Commune’s own Michael Bennet who works at Brewer’s Reserve.
Started off as Irish but used a lot of hops. Hops centennial, Matoaka, Saaz, Amarillo, Citra are some of the hops used as they were on hand and were customer favorites. 2 row is base with Vienna, Chocolate and a few others. Water additions based upon Costa Mesa water profile.
Milk Stout – Mike’s homebrew recipe. Too much lactose. Meant to a have a Cappuccino feel.
West Coast IPA – dry, hoppy
Pale Ale – Collaboration with a merchandise company.
Yeast Presentation – Harvesting and Re-pitching – Calvin presentation.
