Re: BJCP Listed Competitions - 1st Quarter 2009
Hey Thanks BC:
I noticed that few (if any) of these had e-mail addresses / websites. Aside from calling each one, are they available somewhere?
Also, I would find a "Competition DB" as an extension of the BC site useful.

Thanks, I especially appreciate the value added highlights of some of the comps.

Care to elaborate on "value added highlights"? I'm not sure I follow.jward wrote:Thanks, I especially appreciate the value added highlights of some of the comps.

Rob took the time to highlight some of the more noteworthy comps:dhempy wrote:Care to elaborate on "value added highlights"? I'm not sure I follow.jward wrote:Thanks, I especially appreciate the value added highlights of some of the comps.
I think that pointing out comps that standout or are of particular interest to BC members ads value. The calendar system could allow for more of this including other information like don't drop your bottles off for the ABC comp at BFD liquor since they leave your bottles in their hot back room for a week.brew captain wrote:These are some of the best competitions of the year. Thanks for that elaboration .. I'll keep it in mind as we're looking at the addins.
I won't get back to this until Friday at the earliest as I've got to travel this week for clients.

Re: BJCP Listed Competitions - 1st Quarter 2009
Had some time this morning to look at (or at least try to look at) the other promising Events managers for Joomla. First, I was partially able to get the BC home page installed on my local machine. I've still got a few things to overcome but I can at least see light at the end of the tunnel.
The other Events Managers I looked at are Eventing and JEvents. Unfortunately, both of these require the legacy plugin be turned on in Joomla. When I did this, I couldn't get my copy of the BC homepage to load properly. This pretty much leaves us with EventList as the only viable option. Turns out, that EventList isn't really a bad option. I spent a little time getting it configured and I think we can easily mold it into what we want.
Here are my current thoughts / plans and some general info for the community.
First, Events are assigned categories. I can only think of a couple of pertinent types for these .. "HomeBrew" competition (come one come all entrants) and the "Club Only" (a single entry per club). Even if there are more, I think we should only allow admins to set up categories. We'll want to start thinking about the other types before too long.
We need to think about access to these both for submission and simple viewing. EventList requires that submission be from a Registered User at a minimum. There is an option for "special" and I assume that we can make that work for Club Member and or perhaps other subsets of registered users. I don't see any need to restrict viewing of these things .. but we will need to have some restrictions.
Events are tied to Venues ... new comps will have to have Venues added. The venue has the address info and website but no phone number ... we'll have to see if we can "extend" that .. otherwise, phone numbers will have to go in comments. For recurring events, as long as the venue doesn't change, the following year's event should be simple to add. There is a link to add venue right off the add event page so navigation is simple. If the venue exists, it is available via pulldown.
The calendar module add on seems to work fine. I want to do some additional testing with it before I render a final opinion. I'm going to take the competition info from the top of this thread and see how it looks on my system. Once I have the data in the system, I want to see if we can create a widget (perhaps not the correct term) that displays the next few (4-5) upcoming comps (links) on a page somewhere.
Assuming that all goes well, I'll work with Brent and we'll see if we can get something up on the Beta Site for feedback. It may be plain vanilla but that'll make maintenance easy!
Cheers!
