Re: Chocolate Rye

+1 to American Brown Ale

Maybe a rye porter? It could be a nice accent in a milk stout or foreign export stout, but I don't know if the rye would really come through.

Re: Best places for ingredients

Re: Favorite San Diego Brewery

Yea, I'm aware of Hamilton's, Toronado, Blind Lady, but they were all a little too far from where we were staying. We were basically walking everywhere, so we were looking for places in the Downtown/Gaslamp area.

Re: Favorite San Diego Brewery

Just got back, we hit up Green Flash on the way down and Hess on our way back. We sampled a bunch of really good beers at Green Flash. I liked their tasting room, it's a cool setup. Hess was also really cool, you kind of walk over the brewhouse on your way to the tasting room so you can get a good l...

Re: Favorite San Diego Brewery

Thanks for all the tips, we'll have to see how many of these I can work into the schedule while we're down there.

Re: Kolsch feedback

With WLP029 I would typically pitch between 60-62F and ferment at 64F, so I think you'll be fine. I don't see any reason to try to bump the temp up. If you decide you want to increase the temp, a light bulb works well.

Re: Favorite San Diego Brewery

She doesn't drink beer, but she does drive. :happybeer: It looks like Modern Times and the Stone Liberty Station are fairly close to where we'll be staying, and so is Coronado. I'll see if I can work a few of these in, but I'm not sure how much brewery touring she's going to want to do. I agree abou...

Favorite San Diego Brewery

We're going down to San Diego for a few days next week for our anniversary and the wife suggested a stop at a brewery on the way down. I don't think I'll be able to turn the anniversary trip into a brewery tour, so I'm probably limited to one on the way down and maybe something near downtown where w...

Re: Kolsch feedback

I wouldn't consider Maris Otter a Vienna substitute, but it won't hurt the beer to use it. IMO Munich would get you closer than MO, but Vienna is pretty distinctive. I've got plenty of Vienna, I could certainly spare a pound and I'm a lot closer than the LHBS. In my Kolsch recipe, I get all my hop f...

Re: Gas ball lock connector with check valve

So, I bought one of these QDs with the check valve today at Steinfillers. I then happened to overfill one of my kegs and it started pushing liquid into the gas line, so I decided to try it out. When I connected it to the keg, it promptly started spraying beer out from around the base. I took it off ...

Re: Big Mouth Glass Fermenter

It does look like a big improvement over traditional glass carboys. Still a downgrade from plastic buckets though!
