Re: Need help improving the taste of my beer

Greets all, Quick update. I just sampled AG#2, my Amerian Amber Ale, and it is a huge improvement over my AG#1 beer! Yeah!!! :happybeer: The malty, nutty flavor is very nice. Hop character is pleasing & balanced. No astringency! So being that the 2 recipes are very similar, I reviewed my notes f...

Re: Blow off construction

I was in a similiar straight last week! I'd only used 3-piece bubblers before and it clogged on day 2 of my Old Ale. I ended up grabbing a spare 2.5 feet of 1/2" tubing from my gear, and slipping the end onto the inner stem of the bubbler. improv_blowoff.jpg While mabye not a proper wide neck b...

Re: Next recipe.. An Old Ale

Well, I brewed this one today, with a slight modification. I upped the mash recipe to a 7 gallon target, so that I could split 2 gallons off for a gruit version of this recipe at the same time. Also, I could not find a resonable source for Golden Promise malt, so substituted more Maris Otter instead...

Re: Kegerator / Chopping up cornies...

Thanks for the info on the faucets! I am nearly done, and have hit a small snag. As I was feeding the tubing down the tower hole and placing the tower for mounting .. I got a sinking feeling in my stomach... my bolt holes are a little bit off. Dang! I measured everything twice, I know I did ... and ...

Re: Need help improving the taste of my beer

Another good suggestion! I'll recalibrate before I brew on Sunday!

I'm looking forward to a good brewday, and this time I'll have good temp. control during fermentation! Should be fun! :happybeer:

Re: Mash thickness when batch sparging

Hey Dan, I've been curious about the same thing, and was reading up about batch sparging a few days ago at beersmith.com . I am no expert, but it sounds like they are basically saying that the mash thickness is not an issue. With the 168-170 degree sparge water, you are not trying to mash out extra ...

Re: Kegerator / Chopping up cornies...

Started working on the kegarator this weekend, inbetween soccer games with my kids. From homebrewtalk.com, I saw somebody put a whiteboard sheet on the inside of the door, once he cut out the door shelving system. That's cool, so I did that today on mine. I also moved my wood brace piece forward an ...

Next recipe.. An Old Ale

Hey all, My 3rd AG batch is scheduled for either Father's Day or the week after. As I may have mentioned before, I have an interest in gruit ale and my December batch is now very enjoyable. Not having any specific recipes to go from, my 1st attempt was so bitter (e.g. rip your tastebuds off), that I...

Re: Need help improving the taste of my beer

Wow! Such great responses! There is so many good suggestions here... Thank you! :) To answer some of the questions above: I used store bought 'Drinking Water', a tip I got back in my early days that too much filtering does not leave enough minerals for good brew. So, its always the 'drinking water' ...

Re: Need help improving the taste of my beer

Thanks Brad! On the gravities, I got: OG: 1.061 FG: 1.008 ... BeerSmith estimates OG:1.062 and FG:1.014. Would my lower than expected FG indicate I did not mash at 154 as BeerSmith predicts... ? One other thought: I have always put my hops from the boil straight into the fermenter after cool-down. S...

Need help improving the taste of my beer

Hey all, I gave my first AG brew a proper tasting last night, and it was not what I was hoping for. This is the American Amber Ale recipe that I posted in the recipe forum previously. 8.0# Pale Malt (2 Row) - US 1.5# Caramel/Crystal Malt -45L 1.0# Munich Malt 10L 0.5# Melanoidin Malt 0.5# Cara-Pils ...
