Can someone address this. I am interested to hear the answer as well.
Just a guess... but what may have happened is that there was a mini best of show (MBOS) round for that category where several great beers were put up against each other regardless of score. During the MBOS the initial scores were ignored, and the judges simply selected the best beer out of several excellent examples. Maybe Lyn can chime in on this... it should say MBOS somewhere on the score sheet if this is what happened.
Great minds think alike, eh Lars?
Hey that's only half a quote! The full quote is:
Great minds think alike . . . fools seldom differ.
I agree with Lars and Brad. At the HMMC this is a common practice because of the large number of entries in several of our categories. We actually split out Melomels this year into Berry Melomels and Other Fruit Melomels. We initially had about 76 in the Other Fruit Melomel Category and many berry mels so it made it a lot easier to judge that way, and then we split the judging tables and ran two judging panels on each. We ran six judging panels on three tablels with three Berry Melomels and three Other Fruit Melomels.

OK, well now I know why Dan's Strawberry Mel didn't pick up first. We have a pretty good indication of regional bias at work. Notice the number of quaff winners in category 24-26. I'll also wager that most of the mead was entered by quaff members as well.
Not a consipiracy theory, just a very predictable situation with mead. I'd wager that most of the folks who judged wouldn't pass the new MJCP exam when it comes out late this year. I'd bet that fewer than that could identify traditional meads made from three of the top ten most commonly used honeys.
I guess it's a good thing that none of my beers made it through to the second round. While we were at SCHF, someone stole all my beer out of my outside fridge, including all the beers I had bottled for NHC. I was going to enter them in the IEB comp in June since they didn't make it to the NHC second round.
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada down at Trader Vic's
Plus, I looked over the other regions in Cat. 7 and out of the 29 beers being sent up to 2nd round 11 of them were Cali Commons and 7 of them took 1st out of the 10 regions! so there will be some serious competition in the 2nd round!
Cheers,
Lyn

I did the same thing in the stout category, and my stout is the only sweet stout advancing. I was a bit surprised to see that...
The sweet stout got a blue ribbon and a "gold" certificate, which makes sense.
What I don't understand is that the APA got a "Bronze" certificate, when it didn't place in any category. Did that mean that maybe it made it to mini-BOS, or that it was the 3rd-best APA, or do all entries within a certain score range get a certain certificate? It scored a 29, so I wouldn't have expected to get anything for it.
Brad,
The AHA gives out those cert's based on how the beer scored, not placed.
I got my packet today and the Cali and my "old ale" scored over 30 and got silver cert's with the cali getting the winning blue ribbon with a 37 and the high score was a 42.5 (due to mini-bos).
My other 2 entries scored 27 +/- and they got bronze cert's.
Anyway, great job and here's to our beers being on the podium in Cincinatti later on next month!
BTW, I think this is the first time we've had 2 1st place beers go to the 2nd round from BrewCommune, ever! Next year, let's try to make it more.
Cheers,
Lyn

Holy crap!
UPS said it's in Lexinton KY , and it's hotter than hell there and the beer won't get there till monday 6-9. Hope the quick, then slow, then quick then slow helps out Mike's Cali!
it was 3 day select ups from my neighbor at work for FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Well not exactly, I bought and gave him The Bruery's Saison and Orchard Wit for the shipping.
Good life hope to the beers! They were double/double bubble wrapped with AirBag's so they should not (and will not) break but I'm concerned about the temps while waiting to be delivered. Can make a 40+ lager turn into a 12 if not cooled upon receipt. Oh well,we'll see!
Cheers,
Lyn
