Off-flavor training

Post by ctninh »

I am looking to put together a off-flavor testing for anyone interested. I am looking into the Siebel off flavor kits here https://www.siebelinstitute.com/products/sensorykits/. I hope to get either the Intermediate or Advanced kit. This would be helpful if anyone is considering a BJCP exam, Cicerone exam, or wants general sensory training.

The Siebel off flavor kits are enough for 1 liter (~33.8 oz) of beer. That's enough for about 14 people.

Below are some estimated prices assuming 14 people splitting the costs. Also, keep in mind that tasting cups, snacks, water, ect adds a bit to the price.

Intermediate Kit: $130
Shipping: $29
Beer: $1.80 (Since 1 L is about three 12 oz cans; 12 flavors x 3 cans = 36 cans = 2 cases of 18-pk; price is from what I can get from just paying CRV)
Total: $160.80
Total for each person, assuming 14: $11.49

Advanced kit: $160
Shipping: $29
Beer: $2.70 (Since 1 L is about three 12 oz cans; 18 flavors x 3 cans = 54 cans = 3 cases of 18-pk; price is from what I can get from just paying CRV)
Total: $191.70
Total for each person, assuming 14: $13.70

I am looking for interest to determine if this is worth looking farther into. After that, location and time are the next steps. I work weekends for July, so that may be an issue for now. aybe we can bring this up at the next club meeting.
