Dry Hopping

Post by kevinham »

My Black IPA is about ready to be dry hopped. According to Stone they use what would be the equivalent of 4oz of hops for a 5 gal batch. I have enough hops, but is 4 oz really necessary? I haven't seen any other recipes call for this much. I was planning on just using 2 oz. instead. Any ideas or thoughts on this?

The recipe I used was:
9 lbs Light DME
0.5 lbs Crystal 60L
0.5 lbs Carafa Special III

1 oz Columbus @ 60 min (pellet)
1 oz Amarillo @ 1 min (whole)
0.5 oz Cascade @ 1 min (whole)
0.5 oz Centennial @ 1 min (whole)

White Labs WLP001 Yeast

I would just use the Amarillo, cascade, and centennial in the same ratio for dry hopping.

Kevin,
If you want, just dry hop with a 1/2 oz of each for a couple of weeks. When you siphon into bottling/keg, just keep the racking cane above the bottom of the carboy to leave the hops behind.
Cheers,
Lyn

4oz seems like a lot of dry hops for 5G. 2oz will get you a nice hop flavor/aroma. Columbus is excellent for dry hopping in my experience as well. If you've still got some I'd throw it in as well.

Should I just use 0.5oz of all 4 then? Or are there a couple that would be best to dry hop with?

I knew the 4 oz was unnecessary.

Yea, I'd go with 1/2oz of all 4. I think that sounds mighty tasty. 4oz may be even better, though! :)

Haha, damn that last sentence didn't help! Well I only have an oz of Columbus left so I might as well use it right? Maybe I will use 3 oz.

1 oz Columbus and Amarillo
0.5 oz Cascade and Centennial

Sound tasty?

Start with the 2oz, 1/2 oz of each. You can always add more hops, but you can't take them away.

I agree, start with 2 then go up from there if you want. 2oz in a 5g batch should still get you tons of great aroma.
