Simple Extract Hefeweizen

Post by bwarbiany »

Since brewing all-grain, I haven't done a single extract beer, with the exception of helping my brother-in-law through his first brew. But I want to brew a nice simple Hefe for a keg, and throwing a 5 gallon batch of extract brew in amongst my brew day this Saturday seems very simple, and from everything I've seen, an extract hefe comes out just as nice as most all-grain hefe's.

So what's the verdict on this:

6lb Dry Wheat Extract
0.75 oz Tettnang (60 min)
0.25 oz Tettnang (0 min)
WLP300

Looks to be about 1.052, 12 IBU.

I don't think I can get much more simple than this, but I'm guessing for a basic Hefe to throw into the keg for the summer, this will cover all my bases...

Wheat Extract (at least the kind B3 sells) is 65% Wheat, 35% Barley.

So that recipe includes barley malt.

Ah!

I did not know that. In that case, you're right, doesn't get much simpler.

Ended up pushing this off (I would have had to buy ingredients at O'Shea, and I simply can't stomach paying that much).

So I'm looking at it again, and I considered the SafBrew WB-06, their dry Wheat beer yeast. It looks like it's a bavarian hefeweizen yeast, which is the style I'm shooting for...

Has anyone used this in the past?

I haven't tried it, but it's supposed to be the same strain as WLP300/WY3068 (Weihenstephan). I've heard pretty good results from it on other boards.
