2011 Mazer Cup International - BC Strikes Again!
Congratulations to our own Lars Wright and Kevin Hammons!
Lars took First Place in the 24C Traditional Mead - Sweet Category with his classic Mesquite mead!
Kevin took Third Place in the 26A Open Category Mead with his Oaked Macadamia Nut Blossom Mead!
Great job guys! You medal-ed in one of the 12 largest BJCP Sanctioned competitions in the USA. Oh yeah, you also took medals in the largest mead-only competition in the world.
I'll bring your Mazers back with me give them to you personally so I can shake your hand and congratulate you in person!
Keep making mead!
Cheers,
Pete

Re: 2011 Mazer Cup International - BC Strikes Again!
Hey all,
Just got my score sheets from the Mazer Cup, and was really happy with the feedback & scores. A very big THANK YOU! to Pete & John Ward for instructing/hosting the mead day last April! I entered two meads from that day: Hibiscus-Rose Metheglin and Yarrow-Hibiscus-Rose Metheglin.
The Hibiscus-Rose Metheglin averaged 38... not bad. They noted that it was a bit sweeter than a semi-sweet, and a bit cloudy, but otherwise an enjoyable metheglin.
The Yarrow-Hibiscus-Rose Metheglin was entered under the Open Mead category (26C). It averaged 44.5 and had some really positive comments about the blend of the spices & balance. This one went on to the 2nd round, but was soundly trounced by Kevin's Oaked Macadamia Blossum Mead (nicely done dude!) This one was also was a tad cloudy, and suggested that less sweetness would let the herbs come through better.
I really got to thank Pete for encouraging us to submit our meads to the competition in the first place! Also, he suggested that I add some allspice to my planned mead, to help balance it out, and that addition was noted and appreciated by all judges.
Looking forward to another mead in my near future!

Re: 2011 Mazer Cup International - BC Strikes Again!
BTW, I was curious as to who took the Gold Medal in the Open Mead (26C) category, and it turns out he is a pro-brewer at Dog Fish Head, and not yet a commerical mead-maker, although they are working on it.
Check out his 8 entries to the Mazer cup on his Brimming Horn Meadery blog.

p.s. it was his 'Basilisk' mead that took the gold ...
