2014 AHA National Homebrew Competition
I just got an email from the AHA on this, so I thought I'd post to ensure everyone is prepared. There are some changes due to last year's entry debacle.
Registration: Jan 27-Feb 2 -- Note - you don't need to identify styles here, just number of entries
Requirements: You must be an AHA member at the time of registration, and know your registration number. If you're not already an AHA member, I recommend signing up ASAP so you have this in hand.
Registration flow: It is not first-come first-served. You can enter your preferred (as well as alternate) shipping locations, as well as number of entries you wish to send. There is a maximum of six. Based on these entries, the AHA folks are going to try to fairly allocate entries, so you MAY NOT get all 6 entries approved. You will be notified by email between 2/10 and 2/19 how many entries are approved, and at that time have 3 days to pay for your entries.
Drop-off Dates: Arrive at designated shipping location between 3/10 and 3/17.
Drop-off Locations: TBD
All other details will be added later.

Not sure if this link will work, but it looks like my Sour Old Ale took 3rd place in the Specialty Category (50 entries) during the 1st round in San Diego!

Pretty happy about that!
Edit - looks like that link won't work unless you had an entry being judged in San Diego.

Congrats Brian! That's very cool. When you say 1st round, does that mean that you could actually place different in a future round?

First, Second, and Third place beers that score over 30 points progress to the final round, so I assume I will be shipping it off to Grand Rapids to compete in the finals for NHC.JonW wrote:Congrats Brian! Congrats!
Is this all from the same batch that would have to be almost 4 years old now, or did you brew it again?

I brewed it again with a couple minor tweaks, but it will be nearly two years old in June.bwarbiany wrote:Congrats!

Congratulations Brian, and good luck.
I think I have a friend who might have enjoyed this sour before...

Score sheets came today. Average of 41.5, and the brewer judge asked me to e-mail him.

If anyone wants to come over and watch the streaming of the awards ceremony, let me know. I'll be home watching it. I put up an event on Facebook, but I can't reach everyone that way.
Come by anytime after 4. Looks like it starts streaming at 4:30 our time.

Hey Brian, how did you ship your entry.I went to a UPS store and said I was shipping a yeast sample and he said that contains alcohol in it and can't be shipped.
Re: 2014 AHA National Homebrew Competition
I used FedEx. I went with a large FedEx One Rate box. Printed and paid for the label online and just dropped it at the counter at the local FedEx Kinko's Tuesday morning. Fortunately the person at the counter was busy helping someone else, so interaction was minimal. It was delivered today.hjw wrote:Hey Brian, how did you ship your entry.I went to a UPS store and said I was shipping a yeast sample and he said that contains alcohol in it and can't be shipped.
