Keg O-Rings

Does anyone happen to know of our Keg Lid O-Rings as listed in Tips and Tricks are the "thicker" ones? I was trying to solve a leak issue with one of my kegs .. when I went to the LHBS the proprietor sold me a new thicker O-Ring and it solved my issue. He told me that he only installs the newer, thicker o-rings when rebuilding kegs.

When I get a chance I'll go ahead and measure one of each and try to figure it out.

One of the things I notice on some lids that don't seal as well is that the legs on the bale seem to be bent slightly. Bending those back down will help to put more pressure against the o-ring. Additionally, going to the thicker o-ring will take up that slack as well.

I have a keg or two that seem difficult to get a good seal ... lost a lot of CO2 to them. I already have the silicon keg lid rings from McMaster-Carr that DrDually posted... but I have not installed them to all my kegs. I think I will try that this weekend, and see if I can get a better seal.

Are you using keg lube?

Yes, but very sparingly and not consistently. How often do you re-apply, with every washing? How much do you apply? A thin coating, or a goopy one?

Apply a thin coating...anything more will just make a mess

I use a thin coating when I wash them. I've never had the big o-ring leak.

My biggest problem is the poppets.

First: Admin or Brent, when you read this seems like the Tips and Tricks page needs an update to include the ones listed by Dr. Dually ... in fact, Chris why don't you post everything you have or at least PM it to Brent so that we can get it to the Tips and Tricks list.

Second: I looked up both of the keg lid o-rings on McMaster and they are the same except one is silicone and the other is Buna-N (1/4" thick). I'll have to go measure the ones I have. I'm sure that they're all the 4" O-rings ... but I can clearly see that the "thicker" one I have does has a larger "width".

Ok, I will be sure to apply a new thin layer with every washing. I also have had problems with the poppets as well. Usually, I just wiggle the top of the ball lock where the poppet seals, and I can get them to behave. .. usually...

The last two rings are used on older pressure relief valves
So far only one has cracked and needed replacement

Also, the "dash" number is an easy way to locate the specific ring you require

I took a caliper and measured a couple of lid o-rings last night. The majority were 0.270 ... I suspect these are the equivalent to the 1/4" rings on McMaster. I did find one ring that measured .305 a shade under 5/16" which I cannot find on Mcmaster) and I believe that this one is the thicker one I was sold.

A quick web search (I shouldda done this first) led me to http://www.williamsbrewing.com/OVERSIZE ... G-P58.aspx. So I'll head back over to the LHBS and get a couple of these to have on hand I guess.

FWIW I did read somewhere along the line that the silicone o-rings are softer than Buna ... especially at colder temps and may do a better job of sealing so I'll get some of those on my next Mcmaster order.
