This just in ...

WALKING AND BEER

A recent study found the average American walks about 900 miles per year.

Another study found Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of beer a year.

That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon.

Kind of makes you proud to be an American

"Average" doesn't take into account the fact that the heaviest drinkers just might be the lightest walkers, in general...

I know I drink a lot more than 22 gallons of beer every year...

I need to start walking more!

Dan, I'm not sure a gaussian distribution would be the best fit for the data. The skewnesss is not the only concern here... I'd be worried about the kurtosis of the distribution as well (I think it'd be highly peaked on one end). However, I think a fairly simple regression equation would allow for very accurate prediction in this case.

Hmmm, seems like the regression would have to be non-linear since the propensity for tangential travel would increase by an order of magnitude (as the ABV in the bloodstream rises) and would likely skew the results of any linear/standard deviation models.

Then again . . . more beer!

It is sounding like a Factor Analysis is in order here. But let's have a few beers first!

I think a multi level modeling approach might work better than factor analysis. The different levels of the model could represent different classes of beer drinkers. We could then model the different trajectories of beer consumption, walking habits and general health status.

Uh, I think I need a beer, or three.
