Oskaar in Reno, NV to present at the ABF Convention
Hey Dudes and Dudettes,
I'll be standing in for Ken Schramm (author of the Compleat Meadmaker) to do a Meadmaking presentation and discussion of honeys commonly used in Meadmaking at the American Beekeeping Federation Convention in Reno/Sparks, Nevada this Friday, Jan 16, 2009.
Some of you may or not be aware of the current situation with Colony Collapse Disorder (an apalling loss of hives in North American and many other parts of the world) affecting a growing number of hives worldwide. This group of people contains many of the leading Entomologists worldwide who are trying to find a cure for what can be a very serious problem if it continues to grow. This is a tremendous opportunity to meet some of these folks and talk honey, but also a great opportunity to get the Brewcommune name out there. I'll be sure to pimp Brewcommune.com while I'm there. It's a great opportunity to meet people who know local beekeepers, and by extension, new sources of honey that may not be readily available to people who aren't involved with the ABF.
In any case I'll snap some photos for the BC Gallery while I'm there!
Cheers,
Oskaar

Damn, I forgot the most important part!
Anyone know any good craft breweries or brewpubs there in Reno or Sparks, Nevada?
Cheers, Pete

Well that's totally cool. Good luck Pete. Schramm is sure going to be pissed when he doesn't get invited back anymore after you steal his place
I was watching a show about CCD and the entomologists painted a pretty grim picture as they don't even know what they are fighting yet. Some experts were sure it's a final build up of pesticides in the bee's system, some think it's a virus, some think it's a parasite (bee mites) and some think it's a virus on a parasite.... With the sudden onslaught of research, they're discovering; new pathogens, new viruses and new parasites and since everyone found what they're looking for, they still have no idea what they are looking for.
This all leaves the bee keepers with nothing be speculation.
One thing all the experts agreed on: Without bees there are no flowering vegetables, fruit or nut crops and no humans

Hey, I saw this in Bee Movie. Maybe the entomologists need to watch that too.

I've been to Silver Peak (Reno), and Brew Brothers (In the Eldorado Casino). Both were ok. I think I liked Brew Brothers better actually. My wife liked the beers at Silver Peak, I didn't really care for them. We were planning to get to Great Basin in Sparks, but never made it there. Reno is a fun town, but has some seriously crappy areas. Have fun!Oskaar wrote: Anyone know any good craft breweries or brewpubs there in Reno or Sparks, Nevada?

Also, there is a BJ's somewhere in Reno too.
Shut up and brew

Good luck and have fun Pete.
Last time we were in Reno we went up and poked around Virgina City to take up some Wild West History. I think that there was a brewery in town but alas I'm old and don't recall the name. I didn;t get to sample it anyhow.

I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada down at Trader Vic's

Looks like the Great Basin Brewing company is the one to go to. They seem middle of the road based on the RateBeer.com ratings I've seen.
I'll advise after tasting some of their beers.
Cheers,
Pete
