OCMU vs Brewcommune REMATCH

Post by CurtisG »

Hey Guys,
I want to announce this year's annual co-competition with the OC Mash ups. The 2019 Brewtus Mashimus!

The rules for the competition will be like last year with a few tweaks from things we learned along the way.

Since we unfortunately lost last year we chose this to be a small beer competition. All beers OG must be 1.040 or under to enter!

I'm also happy to announce we've teamed up with Gunwhale Ales to have the BOS beer brewed on Gunwhale's new system being built in Orange. Gunwhale will be picking the BOS beer so we've added their Mantra to our rules to help you choose the right beer to brew.

We may have lost last year but I feel we can take the cup back!

Please see below for rules and comment on this post with any comments or questions.

Brewtus Mashimus 2019
Battle Royal between Brewcommune and OC Mashups
Dates:
Judging: September 21, 2019 at Gunwhale (Orange)
Registration: Opens in early August, closing September 14
Eligibility:
1. Current members of Brewcommune and OC Mashups
2. Up to 2 entries per person
3. This will be a no fee contest
Beer Drop off:
Beer can be dropped off at the following locations:
1. Brewer’s Hardware
2. Windsor Homebrew
3. Gunwhale (Costa Mesa location, Orange if it’s available)
Beer styles:
1. Starting gravity limited to 1.040
2. Beer list (see excel file)
3. BOS winning beer must fit within the Gunwhale ethos:
“Our beers strike a balance between the raw, wild spirit of farmhouse brewing, and the pioneering hop forward styles of California. We have an obsession with yeast driven Saisons, hoppy IPAs, and other rustic, wild and sour beers. This gives our beers uncommon qualities that are both surprisingly delicate and nuanced, yet refined and robust in their simplicity. From bright, billowy summer ales to rustic, fortifying stormers that stand up to the rougher seas, Gunwhale makes beers that reflect the culinary and cultural heritage of the West Coast. “
Cup Rules:
1. Beer styles will be grouped via the defaults setting in brewcompetition.com
2. Beers awarded metals in each group will be given the following points:
a. Gold; 3 points
b. Silver: 2 points
c. Bronze: 1 point
3. The homebrew club with the most points will be awarded the Brewtus Mashimus cup
BOS Rules:
1. Gunwhale will choose the top beer from the BOS round
2. The BOS beer will be brewed by Gunwhale in the new brewery in Orange.

Since Gunwhale will be picking BOS and brewing the winning beer we opened up the categories a bit compared to our planning post. They also asked for no lagers so they are left out.

Everything still must be 1.040 or under original gravity though! We'll let the judges know about this rule as well.

If a club wants their best chance of winning they should split up the categories we enter in.

That being said if the brewer wants to go for BOS and brew a beer specifically to Gunwhale's ethos you can do that as well. Since we only have 2 entries per brewer choose wisely!

I'm a little confused here. Are the beers to be judged on how they conform to the BJCP categories? Or how they conform to the Gunwhale ethos?

If I were to brew a Kolsch, and it is a great example of the style, it goes to the final round. However, it may not be chosen as BOS by Gunwhale, as it lacks that fun, rustic funk or hoppy character they like. If I were to overly hop my Kolsch, or use a farmhouse yeast, it will no longer score well as a kolsch. So, what should I be brewing?

Or should I just brew my best saison or farmhouse ale, and see if I can clean both hurdles with one beer?

Just curious...:)

Because this competition is primarily a Cup challenge between the OCMU and Brewcommune the beers will be judged by BJCP category with the caveat of a 1.040 OG.

The BOS beer being brewed at Gunwhale is a bit of an extra bonus.

That being said, Gunwhale will most likely pick a BOS winner that follows their beer styles since it will be served at their location.

I agree this will most likely be a saison or session IPA, and if you want to go for BOS I would recommend brewing one of these.

But this brings a bit of strategy to this club challenge. If a club only enters session IPAs and saisons, they will lose the overall cup challenge because they won't have entries in any other categories.

So brewers will have to choose between entering for themselves or for the club!

We do get two entries though, so you can always enter one for each.

Do we need to signup for this competition ahead of time? When is drop-off deadline?

Thanks,

Sorry for the holdup! We were still setting up the website. You can find all of the info here:

https://brewtus-mashimus-2019.ocmashups.org/

Entry registrations accepted 08/01 through 09/15.

You do have to register as if it were a paid competition, but the entry fee is free. Only 2 entries will be accepted per brewer.

So - I have a Sapporo clone that I just started lagering yesterday - yeah, we made it with cereal-mashing some rice - worth entering (in category 34?), or, don't go there?

I just signed up to do a Weissbier also.

Based on the info on Sapporo's web site I don't think a Sapporo clone would meet the 1.040 OG requirement, looks like it would be somewhere around the 1.044-1.046 range. But If you brewed it to <= 1.040 I think it would be fine to enter. I wouldn't expect it to win BOS because the allowed categories make it look like Gunwhale doesn't want to do a lager, but it could still win the category and get points towards the cup!
