Brewers Hardware Hop Filter Testing
Hey guys!
We are testing out some hop filter prototypes and are looking for guinea pigs to help give us feedback. It is similar to a hop spider and just hooks on to the side of your kettle.
We were hoping to get these tested within the next couple weeks, so if you are brewing soon and don't mind giving feedback you can stop by our warehouse and pick one up. After you brew with it and give feedback it is yours to keep! We have a few different sizes: 4", 6", and 8" and all are 18" overall length. All are 400 micron.
If this sounds interesting and you would like one just post here with which size works with your setup.

Re: Brewers Hardware Hop Filter Testing
Hi gents - I have one of these (300 micron cylindrical SS mesh), but don't use it any more - it kept clogging with hop material, and I was concerned the hop oils weren't getting fully contacted by the wort. Hopefully yours will work better, but at 400 um mesh, you might see the same thing.

Thanks for the info Jim! We will keep an eye out for clogging.MrAverageGuy wrote:Hi gents - I have one of these (300 micron cylindrical SS mesh), but don't use it any more - it kept clogging with hop material, and I was concerned the hop oils weren't getting fully contacted by the wort. Still need help? I am considering making a TIPA just for shits and giggles. I could use the mesh screen if there are some left.

Will, thanks for bringing this up in the meeting.
I am always using hop bags so would be interesting in trying our a hop filter.
My boil kettle is 10 gallon capacity and my pre boil volume is typically 7 gallons.
8 in sounds best though could probably get by with 6 inches

Sorry I didn't respond sooner but if you still want one it's all yours!glenn973 wrote:Hey there! I'll be brewing soon and would be happy to help out.

Sure thing Bob! I think a 6" would work well in a 10 gallon kettle.Mosaic1492 wrote:Will, thanks for bringing this up in the meeting.

I've been thinking about replacing my hop bags with something like this. I was also thinking it might work with a souse vide to maintain mash temps. Any idea if the souse vide would work with your version?

How did these work out?

Overall, they did their job. Made a brown ale (~2 oz pellet hops). It was good with bitterness to the taste. I realize that additions such as syrups can be added to the mesh so it won't scorch on the kettle's bottom. Only issue is the jagged top. It scrapes my hands easily. I loosened it and folded the top over to prevent that. It is low profile, so kettle lids can fit over it. That also means it is difficult to take out during the boil. It filtered all the pellet hops out. Pictures show irish moss in the strainer.
