Competition Date: July 30th and 31st, 2011

Where: Main Street Brewery

Entries Due Date: Drop off by close of business July 16th
Mailed entries due by July 15th

Cost per entry: $6.00 (two standard unmarked beer bottles)

They couldn't get me score sheets last year for any of my entries. I hope they do a better job this year for others.

The quality of this comp has gone down the past few years. I hope they can turn it around this year.

Lets hope so. The last time I entered this comp they lost my score sheets as well and sent me free entry certificates for the following year. They ran out of second place ribbons so sent me a third place ribbon instead with a note saying sorry but here's a ribbon anyway...

That would have been a nice gesture. I only got my check cashed and blame placed on the post office. I hope if we ever get a comp going we step up to electronic copies. That way we wont have to blame the post office even if it is their fault.

Looks like the drop-off deadline is Saturday. I'm thinking I'll enter my Saison, but I need to decide whether to go 16C or 16E.

Particulars:
Grist: ~75% Pils, ~15% Rye, ~10% Cane Sugar
Hops: Magnum for bittering, Saaz for aroma, bittered to 43 IBU
OG: 1.067
FG: 1.004

Given the rye, hopping, and the high 8.2% ABV, I'm leaning towards 16E. Or maybe both?

Your thoughts?

Rye and high hopping rates are not out of place in a saison (16C) at all. The high ABV is out of place. If I were judging saison (I did at this comp last year) and I got your 8.2% beer I'd probably knock you pretty heavily for it if I noticed it. But, that's also one of my pet peeves when it comes to home brewed saison, so maybe you'd fare better with a different judge. (My partner last year felt the same as I do though...)

I'd probably say go with 16E and list it as a strong saison. I wouldn't list rye unless it's REALLY obvious, or it could count against you as a flaw - although some judges may mistake spicy saaz for spicy rye. And I wouldn't list hoppy unless it's WAYY over the top, since hoppy saison is redundant. :)

I will be judging this on Saturday. Anyone else going to be there? I also entered 6 beers and my Melomel.

Judging will start around 10am. They want judges there around 9am for breakfast, instructions, and calibration.

Hey Brad, I will be there too. What did we judge last year with Norm that had the acetaldehyde?

Your memory is better than mine, Hal, because I don't remember that at all. Maybe I have erased it from my memory. I do remember a few years ago at this comp, Lyn and I had a gusher that just wouldn't stop. We had the steward bring out the second bottle and it did the same thing. We didn't even taste it.

Results are in. I did not hear any other BCers names called. My English Barleywine, Vienna Lager, and Brown Porter all finished first. Cream Ale took third and Blonde Ale took second.
