submitting brews for SCHF.

What's the procedure for submitting a beer to be served at the SCHF? Do we need to sign up somewhere and say what we are bringing? Drop it off somewhere before the fest? Bring it to the fest ourselves and meet there? Sorry if this info has already been discussed, but I have been pretty inactive on h...

According to the article Derrin just posted they are planning to open Haven tomorrow at 5PM.[/quote]

My internet filter at work won't let me read that article. If they are opening tomorrow, they have come a long way in two days. Hopefully, they'll be selling tasty brews to go.

Re: Orange Street Fair this weekend

This event is right out my front door. The best beer I saw being served last year were some Bayhawk beers. Luckily, I was able to go to Aldo's and get a Chimay to go since they were inside the festival boundaries. Aldo's is no longer there. Haven's Gastropub has taken it's place, but judging by the ...

DIY Temp Control?

Someone is giving away a whole bunch of Water dispensers on CL. http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/zip/1319973517.html If these are the refrigerated type, which they appear to be, any thoughts on getting them and harvesting refrigeration parts out of them to use for fermentation temp control? Could ...

Use rice hulls or you may regret it. As Kevin said, they are cheap and incredibly usefull.

Devon White Ale

My wife wants to brew the Devon White Ale from Mosher's Radical Brewing p. 246. Here's the recipe Yield: 1 Gallon 4.0 lbs. Pilsner Malt 3.0 oz. wheat flour .5 egg white .2 oz. kosher salt .25 oz. coriander .25 tsp powdered ginger .12 tsp caraway Use Bread Yeast. Different to say the least. This is a...

Re: Diacetyl cover up

This beer is OK as is. This was more of a hypothetical question in case I run into this again. I may split off a gallon and oak it as an experiment. My wife, whose pallette is infinitely better and more sensitive than mine, says this beer is fine. I used 2 vials of WLP002 English Ale Yeast in a star...

Diacetyl cover up

I brewed a stout almost two weeks ago, and it has finished and had it's d-rest and still has some diacetyl. It was pretty strong a few days ago, but has faded somewhat due to the rest. I don't think It's bad enough for me to try this, but I got an idea. If I had a stout with too much diacetyl, could...

Re: Fruit flies. I HATE fruit flies.

Sounds like you need to step up your sanitation. Are your carboy's airtight? I don't think that fruit flies are especially attracted to rye. I just tapped a fresh keg of RyePA yesterday. If your beer is foul, I'll give you a consolatory pint.

Re: Need help improving the taste of my beer

If preheating your mashtun is an issue, as brought up by a few here, my method of pre-heating works pretty well for me. I use a 5 gallon igloo cooler (although I'll probably upgrade before I brew again). I heat up my sparge water first to about 185° and dump it in my mash tun while I heat up my stri...

Re: Fermentation temp - raise it at the end to "finish the job"?

I don't think that it should be 'necessary'. If you are in the acceptable range for your particular strain of yeast, it should ferment out, but will be slower in the lower temp range. If you 'have' to warm up your fermenter to finish it out, it may have been too cold to begin with. Having said that,...

Re: Brewing at TBC (not a Brewcommune event)

Those are all pretty good. I think I like Radio Slayer and Pail Fail Pale Ale best.

I just realized that I hadn't opened up my glove box since this incident. I just did that to discover everything inside was sticky and wet and that there was a half inch of 4 day old wort in it. Nasty. :(
